PLACES TO VISIT
Because of our central location to numerous historical sites and places of interest, several days can be spent exploring the area. We have given a selection below of the main places that people like to visit, but there are many more besides.
Salisbury's world famous cathedral with its 404 feet spire and its secluded Cathedral Close, is 8 miles to the north. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, Salisbury hold their weekly market in the Market Square. Old Sarum, the old roman encampment is a further one mile north. Also close to Salisbury is Wilton, the ancient capital of Wessex, with Wilton House, the home of the Earl of Pembroke with its 21 acres of gardens which is open to the public. Wilton is also the home of the famous carpet factory.
To the West Longleat is approx 33 miles away, which is the home of Lord Bath with his stately home and Animal Safari Park. Stourhead, with its well know gardens and the village of Stourton. The city of Bath approx 45 miles away, is a beautiful Georgian city with its historic buildings, Bath Abbey and the restored Roman Baths. To the East Winchester is approx 23 miles, is another famous cathedral city, the Great Hall, Kings Arthur's Round Table and the bronze statue of Alfred the Great. Romsey with its 12th century Abbey and the nearby Broadlands House, home of the late Lord Mountbatten of Burma, open to the public between June and August. To the South Places to visit in the New Forest include Beaulieu, the National Motor Museum and Lord Montague's stately home. Lyndhurst, Bucklers Hard and Lymington are also close by. In Portsmouth there is the historic Naval Dockyards with HMS Victory and Henry VIII Mary Rose. |
